RWX: Overview

An RWX file is a file that defines the shape of an object in the world. It is a text file that can be edited with any text editor (such as notepad).

You do not use the RWX format to create objects. In particular, if you use Truspace to create your objects you can simply use the .cob files created by Truspace. However, if you do not have Truspace or you need to edit an old RWX object, then you can use RWX script to create the objects you need.

Historical Information

The RWX format was once used by RenderWare as the native 3d model format. In 1998 Criterion replaced the RWX format with the newer binary DFF format.

However, by this time literally thousands of objects had already been built for Activeworlds using RWX. Instead of abandoning the format (which would have meant everyone would have needed to convert all of their objects to the new format) it was decided that Activeworlds would continue to support the old files.

Several extensions were added (by Activeworlds) to the original RWX language. The format is very rarely used outside of Activeworlds, and no other known software supports the added extensions.

The text format of RWX makes the files easy to modify, even without expensive software. The RWX format is relativly easy to understand and learn when compared to other text-based formats, and many tools have been written over the years to ease the editing and conversion of RWX files. For these reasons, the RWX format is still supported today.
