Get To Know Your Neighbors!

We think it would be great if everyone got a chance to get to know some of the volunteers in the community, and to find out why they love AW so much. This month we're highlighting the Gatekeeper of the Month, Lara.

If there's a volunteer you'd like to see us highlight, let us know!

Meet Lara

When you really enjoy something, you can't help but tell others about it! That's what happened back in April 1996. I was playing bridge in the old "GameZone" (now Microsoft's Zone.com) when an AW addict who was playing cards at the same table said, "Have you ever heard of a program called Alphaworld?"

I don't usually try out new programs, but when he mentioned, " ..and you can build 3D houses in there", *that* sounded interesting and different. Maybe it's in the genes..heh.. my father is a retired commercial building contractor. This was before the days of GK's, so thankfully that person was standing there waiting for me, ready to help me learn to walk and fly when I found myself deposited smack in the middle of a very busy AlphaWorld. Yes, this was also long before there was such a thing as a Gate. Alphaworld was "it". The memory of how nice it was to have someone help me the moment I entered, led me to becoming a GK later; as well as to becoming a building teacher in AWSchool world.

It's probably fun to play roles in cyberspace, but I've always been just "me". I would have even used my real name, Laura, if it had been available. :) "Lara" was taken, too, so I started out in AW as LaraCat, then was able to shorten it when registration went into effect much later. a/s/l ? :) I'm a 55 year old woman (will be 56 in December) who lives in Tennessee, USA. My first husband and I trained and showed American Saddlebred horses professionally. I've had a dog boarding kennel and have shown dogs for many years. Some of my dogs are pictured at http://tnlc.com and, yeah, that's me there, too; but that picture was taken almost 6 years ago. One of these days I'll get around to putting a more recent one up. One of my hobbies IRL is playing duplicate bridge in town and at a few tournaments each year.

Building was, and always will be, my favorite thing about Active Worlds. And good old AlphaWorld (despite foggy conditions sometimes ;) is still my favorite world to build in. By the way... worlds with the same name as my name are not connected with me at all. I never have had a world unless you count Quilt world, which I won in an AWTrivia contest and gave away to Haba, who was my teammate in the contest. I'm just a dyed-in-the-wool AlphaWorld builder who enjoys helping newcomers join in the fun, too!
