Activeworlds Inc., a leading developer of 3D community based environments on the Internet, has set Monday, September 27, for the initial "Open House" of it's Educational Universe, the Internet's first online 3-D community dedicated to serving the early childhood through higher education markets.
Monday's event will be the first event of its kind for the educational community. Educators from around the globe are being invited to come tour the revolutionary educational environments that the Active Worlds technology makes possible, as well as participate in discussions with veteran VR (virtual reality) education specialists. Michael Heim, author of the acclaimed Electric Language and Virtual Realism will be discussing the Art Center College of Design's innovative approach to virtual space as an educational tool. Margaret Corbit, Science Writer for the Cornell Theory Center, will be taking educators on a virtual tour of Cornell University's SciCentr, a virtual exploration of scientific methods and data; and Bonnie DeVarco, Director of the V-UCSC project, will be sharing some of the experiences of the University of California at Santa Cruz's highly successful virtual campus and orientation program.
These avid proponents of 21st Century education have expressed excitement about the potential that 3D online technology offers to the education market. "With the quality and bandwidth sensitivity now possible in Active Worlds virtual spaces can be much more complex and realistic. These complex 3D environments can also be built with ease and with a minimum of learning curve" points out Bonnie DeVarco,"So virtual worlds can now be taken more seriously as the collaborative core which could bind the many other distance learning technologies together."
"Until now there was no truly interactive, collaborative solution for online learning environments. We are very excited that the educational community has joined us in the creation of a truly global campus. We are receiving new applications every day," says Activeworlds.com CEO, Rick Noll, " These teachers are true visionaries and we are glad we can work along with them!"
To date over 50 institutions across the globe have been accepted to the Educational Universe with such participants as Cornell University (USA), Ohio State (USA), Franklin College (USA), Loyola University (USA), Nagoya University (Japan), Penn State (USA), University of Urbino (Italy), Malardalen (Sweden), Griffith University (Australia), Charles University (Czech Republic), Canterbury Christ Church University College (United Kingdom), Bergen College (Norway), and many more.
