This problem may be caused in Internet Explorer when a URL had been specified in the VIEW/OPTIONS/ADVANCED/AUTOMATIC CONFIGURATION window. This will give you an Auto-Proxy error when trying to start Internet Explorer.
By removing the URL in this section, Internet Explorer should be able to open without error, and hence Active Worlds is able to open without error too.
