How to Upgrade World Servers to version 4.1

In order to upgrade the World Server software you are hosting from version 3.6 to 4.1, follow these directions below

  1. Stop the Active Worlds 3.6 Server
  2. Make a complete backup of the Active Worlds Server's folder by copying the entire folder to another place on your hard drive.
  3. Restart the 3.6 World Server on your hosting computer
  4. Open the Admin tool (Admin.exe found in the Active Worlds Server folder) and connect to your World Server
  5. Create backup 'dump' files for Property/Elevation/Attributes for each world you are hosting. Do this by highlighting each world you want to backup, and selecting Save Attribute/Save Property/Save Elevation one by one. Be sure to name each file with a prefix of the world name so you don't overwrite each previous save, and can identify which files belong to which world if you are running more than one.
  6. Right-click on each world entry and write down the settings - ( Name, Password, registry - if any - , and Caretakers list )
  7. Close the Admin tool and shut down the 3.6 world
  8. If not already downloaded, download and install the 4.1 World Server Software to a unique folder, such as ( c:\Active Worlds World Server4.1 )
You can download the server software here
  9. Start the 4.1 World Server ( world.exe ).
  10. Open the Admin Tool by double-clicking admin.exe
  11. Connect to your local server, by selecting the following Menu options - Server -> Connect - > default (local)
  12. When the Admin tool connects, select the following Menu options - Server -> Add New World. Enter the information you wrote down from the 3.6 Server in Step 6. ( Note - Some firewall applications ( especially Norton Internet Security ) are known to cause the admin tool to timeout the connection to the local server immediately after installing. If the Admin tool is not getting beyond "connecting to local server" simply close the program and restart it )
  13. Load the Attribute/Property/Elevation dumps by right clicking on each world instance and selecting the appropriate menu option, and pointing to the appropriate file.
  14. Ensure that any firewall software you are running, or router/proxy server you are behind is configured to allow incoming connections to the Active Worlds Server. Consult your user manuals for how to set this up. The Active Worlds server typically accepts incoming requests between ports 6000 and 7000.
