AWCamp Re-Cap Essay

Courtesy of phalaphe

At the AWCamp jamboree, Lucrezia Borgia asked us to write an essay on what we did and our experiences in AWCamp this year.

AWCamp started out, as usual, with the opening ceremonies. Being typical me, I was promptly 10 minutes late and missed all the opening that went on. But I did arrive just in time to see all the campers go to their fort worlds and meet with their counselors for the first time. It was at that moment, when I went to my fort, (which was fort5) that we discussed our theme. In a unanimous vote, the theme of winter was adopted. Soon after we began building ,and the result of our labor can be seen in Fort5 world (that is, until they are taken down until next summer.)

The real fun occurred in the various AWCamp activities that we participated in this year. The first really cool thing we did this year was getting the chance to play paintball in the under construction world of AW@War. Well, OK, so the bot was working for the first 2 minutes and then it kept crashing, but, it was still a TON of fun and I am looking forward to its opening to the public. Oh and flagg was there, which was really cool, :o( but he couldn't give me his autograph…

Anyways, after AW@War (or it may have been before) we went to visit Hamfon in his Hambot world for a lesson on bots. Basically, it was a lecture on what bots can do in activeworlds (he gave me a lot of great ideas for phalbot.) But by far, the best part was playing a sort of paintball-like game with the bots Hamfon spawned (I think he called them buddy bots.) How we played was that everyone had a buddy bot who had the same avatar as its owner, and you tried to kill everyone else's buddy bots by clicking on them. When you killed the bot it would say I went to heaven (although mine probably went somewhere else!!!.) A BIG thanks to Hamfon for letting us play around in his world.

Next event that I recall was the RWX Arts and Crafts with Magine. I didn't really attend that much since I had taken the same class before :o) basically she does an excellent job in providing a basic understanding for scripting in notepad!!!

Bingo followed the three day Arts and Crafts. Unlike previous years, there were only three rounds of bingo :o( which was kinda depressing. The first year of AWCamp we got to play bingo before the world was opened to the public. That was really awesome!! The world itself was different, and games were in series of one per set. And last year there were five rounds. There isn't really much else to report on Bingo… it was Bingo LOL!

What followed Bingo was a really cool adventure into the under construction AWQoP world. I still have yet to figure out what it stands for, but what I can say is… IT'S THE BOMB :o) Everyone their was really nice… oh yeah, you probably don't know what it is. AWQoP is a new RPG world with a hint of paintball. As you walk around the world you click on people and try to kill them by clicking them several times. Twisted into that are levels, armor, weapons, and hit points. I know EVERYONE, well must everyone will be excited when the project is done. The staff there is doing an amazing job and they had some really cool avatars as well. Thanks to everyone there! :o)

The next events were building with lara and a scavenger hunt. I didn't get a chance to go to either but rumor has it they were very entertaining :o) And… here's where it gets circular because I am back to describing the jamboree. Basically we all gathered and just talked for a while and, awci employees popped in every once in a while…e n z o…lucrezia borgia… flagg… the usual ;o) What I really enjoyed was talking to the, well, less known awcom employees. An example is Stacee, I think thats her name, I am pretty sure she did something with graphical design? Anyways she was really nice and fun to talk to. Oh and of course Hamfon was there and, everywhere really, and he was a blast and well… just Ham :o)

And speaking of pork… the final event before the closing ceremonies was trivia in AWTrivia world. Last year we got to help design AWTrivia world as a project for AWCamp. But ConArtist had redone it shortly before camp started this year, so we got to see the brand new world, and play Trivia in the presence of that other white meat (kicks are for trids.)

And like all good things, AWCamp had to end. At the closing ceremonies, Mountain Myst did a superb job of making every second tedious and torturous till we found out who actually won. It must have taken her an hour to announce the winners :o) no joke! And, in the end… Fort5 (my fort) had best fort :o) (yaaahooo!)

However, when I look back on AWCamp it will not be the midnight spooky stories in the meeting hall, or staying up all night to work on the train, or even the "thank heaven for 7-11".wav file that will stick in my head. Rather, the relationships and friendships that I have made throughout those two weeks will be what I remember. I mean, that's what camp is about, and I feel, at least in my fort, that everyone of us got to know a little bit more about each other. And most definitely, I look forward to more 50 gram conversations with Mountain Myst about whatever is on my mind (food mainly.) That's what AWCamp to me, was all about :o)
