Get to Know Your Neighbors!

We think it would be great if everyone got a chance to get to know some of the volunteers in the community and to find out why they love AW so much.

This month we meet NaughtyRedHead who was recently recognized as GK of the Month and Baron who may be better known to some as Peacekeeper 39.

I first came to AW in the early part of 99'. I was prodded to try the program by a very dear friend of mine, King Christian (HydraGlide) we both were tourists for a little while, till our builds were deleted. It didnt take me long to want to purchase a citizenship. I was hooked on building. I have been a Citizen for close to 4 years now, and own several worlds... AW allows my creative side to show.

I first wanted to become a GK about 3 years ago. I used to love to chat in the JunoDome and saw how new users reacted when they first saw the graphics. It reminded me of the first time I entered AW.. and within a few seconds ended up in a time out LOL... yes i said a bad word :( because I couldnt move...*cough cough* So I decided I wanted to help the newbies.. I was a teacher at AWSchool for about a year. But I wanted to do something different. So after a friend convinced me to apply to the GK's I did. I was a GK for about a year, and do to some technical difficulties with my video card, when they did the upgrade I could no longer get into the gate without crashing. I finally got the new card, and here I am back GK'ing again...

One of the things I love most about GK'ing is meeting alot of new people from all over the globe. I have met some really wonderful people in the Gate.. Nothing makes you feel better than, someone saying thanks for all your help... it's pretty rewarding.

Peacekeeper Safety Tip: If you share your privilege Password with someone helping you build change it when the building session is over. You can always tell them the new one then next time they assist you. Changing the password keeps it from been shared with others who might vandalize or erase your properties.

Announcement: The Peacekeepers have openings for community minded people over 18 years old and who have been citizens for at least 6 months. The PKs offer extensive training, fun, travel, adventure and PKs get to go to exotic places, see strange problems and solve them! Visit AW 11986.0S 12057.9W 0.6a for Peacekeeper Academy training details and apply at http://www.peacekeeper.net/application.htm

This month the Peacekeeper profiled is Baron Peacekeeper 39.

Baron, who lives in Greece, discovered Activeworlds in 1998 when he over heard two colleagues mumbling about "rwx". Initially he thought it must be a motorcycle like a GSXR but was further confounded when they associated the term with something called "Artic Worlds". It turned out that they were deeply involved with the development of Greece world, at the time, a very active Greek community. He checked it a few times and became hooked.

He became a citizen as "Baron" in early 1998 but used Greece world spare accounts prior to registering his own account.

He has been a Peacekeeper since June 1999 and, as he says, "Wow over 4 years in the PK and still no sport car, the job doesn't pay much!"

Apart from the obvious 'to help' reason most give for joining the Peacekeepers, Baron has always felt he had to give something back to a community to whom he owes a lot. He always believed that an active community needs a trained group to help in resolving disputes in a peaceful manner. When he found out about the PKs the choice was obvious. Asked what the likes most about the PKs he replied, "I have had a lot of good times all these years in PK but what I like most is being part of a group of great individuals that share many of my views and dreams for AW.

Baron is a member of Core, which is a small group of PKs charged with running the organization and providing support the Peacekeepers who do the patrolling. Being a member of Core he does not have a regular patrol time because his other duties require a significant amount of time mostly dealing with anything tech related in the PK such as programming (apps, bots or for the web). He also maintains the PK mail lists, accounts, forum, and participates in the decision-making debates associated with PK Core duties (the most serious part). Baron admits that because of his additional duties being a PK is practically his only activity in AW.

Baron doesn't build much in fact he says, "It's been years since I left building to the talented and I settled with admiring their work. I've done some building in Greece though which was fun at the time, nothing artistic, and just playing around, nothing worth visiting."

Baron's real life job is pretty demanding he is a professional Information Technology consultant and takes the lion's share of his time, but he doesn't complain because "It's great fun". Other than his job and AW, he enjoys music, cinema, motorbikes and kick boxing.

His message for message for the tourists and citizens of AW is "Eat your vegetables, learn from your mistakes and always remember, even though you seem to be talking to a cartooney avatar, there is a real person on the other side of the connection. Try not to hurt people with your keystrokes, it's not worth it."
