Get to Know Your Neighbors!

We think it would be great if everyone got a chance to get to know some of the volunteers in the community and to find out why they love AW so much.

This month we meet GaiaRose who was recently recognized as GK of the Month and Scouser who may be better known to some as Peacekeeper 5.

How did you first hear of AW?
I am not sure which of my four daughters found it first but they were all pretty much involved with it before they introduced me to it. I have been "addicted" to it ever since. I call it my "drug of choice". LOL

How long have you been a citizen?
Feb 23, 1997

What made you want to become a GK?
I had thought about it, but never seriously considered it until a friend, who was also a Gatekeeper at the time, recommended that I do it. The thing I enjoy most about Active Worlds is meeting people from around the world and what better place to do that than at the Gate? I was also a teacher in AWSchool. This made me appreciate helping others to learn the program.

What do you enjoy most about being a GK?
The people... some can be difficult... but for the most part, it's just plain fun to forget the real world for a while and enjoy meeting new people and having a good time with old friends. It is a real kick to "hear" the amazement of the new people, and it's great fun giving them all the information to make their visit more enjoyable. There is also the privilege of being part of, what I consider to be a really great group of people... Go Gatekeepers!

Peacekeeper Safety Tip: Make sure you know some one very well before allowing them to send you an executable file (like a bot) lots of people get virus infections that way. If you don't' know them never accept a file transfer.

The Peacekeeper for the month of December is Scouser PK 5.

Scouser discovered AW thru a chat program called Worlds Chat, there was a big poster in "The Hub" with Active Worlds on it...so she clicked it and downloaded it. It took her a while to actually stay in AW as she didn't quite understand that it all had to download. She kept asking herself..."um why can't I see anything?" Those words tended to follow her around after being a PK for a while.

She became a citizen in March 1998, after she followed a couple of friends in AW and thought "Well ok let's see how this goes."

Scouser can't remember when she became a Peacekeeper. She says, "Its been a long time since I joined, to be honest I cant remember...I did leave for about 6 or 7 months when real life got in the way but found my way back. I think about 3 yrs ago but I could be wrong."

However, the reason she joined the PKs was simple. "I could help people. I knew from first hand what it had been like to be a newbie and be harassed at AW GZ." When asked what she likes most about being a PK she responded, "I love to meet people and being in the PKs has helped me meet all sorts of people from all over the world, different ages, different cultures. I've also kept them as friends ....Ive gained lots over the years." Her patrol time is Tuesdays at 12pm to 2 pm VRT.

Besides her normal PK duties Scouser helps out with PK Academy, and often backs up other PKs when there is no one else about. She is not involved with any other AW activities at the moment.

Scouser is a world owner and visitors are always welcome in Scrumpy. She does not have many builds in AW because building Scrumpy took up so much of her time in the last 2 or 3 yrs. However, her very first build is located at AW 12505N 12409W 1a . She request that no one laugh at it please. =)

Real life holds other interests for her she has 3 cats and 2 dogs and a load of fish that she has to look after when her husband is away. He travels a lot. She says , "Soon I will be looking after a new baby (human) so will be trying to get used to juggling time with him and animals and AW =) Twice a week I head out to a local pool and do aqua-natal aerobics...is a lot of fun and very beneficial. "

Her message to everyone in AW is: "Be happy, and have fun...it's what we are all here for =)"
