Trivia Bot

The TriviaBot (written by HamFon) has been one of the most popular game bots in the Active Worlds universe since June 1998. The game pattern and questions are intended to be similar to the NTN (National Trivia Network) games that are found in restaurants all over the United States. The bot asks questions, and then listens for anyone who can give the correct answer (or an answer that is close enough!). The faster you can answer the question, the more points you get.

TriviaBot reads a file containing questions and possible answers (one per line). Then it shuffles the questions and asks them all in a random order. As people guess or try to answer, TriviaBot compares the chat text against its list of correct answers. If anyone says one of the right answers (there are usually several to allow for misspelling), the TriviaBot announces that the person has answered correctly. Whoever answers correctly first gets awarded some points - more points for answers that are faster. The TriviaBot continues a game for 15 questions (30 in AWTrivia world), then compares all the scores. The highest score is declared the winner, and a new game begins!

Future enhancements include display of pictures ("This picture shows what famous actress?") and playing of mp3, wave, or midi songs ("What is the name of the artist who sings this song?").

By popular request, TriviaBot has been set up in the AWTrivia world for a weekly showdown, testing your memory of facts from easy to difficult, ranging from sports to history to science to geography to entertainment. Come to AWTrivia world to learn more. The games are played on Tuesday evening at 11PM VRT. You can win prizes like citizenship extensions or add to the number of bots you can run at one time. Come join us!

Oh - and if you already know everything, you can make up your own question set - and see if you can stump the other players! For good question sets, you can earn citizenship or bot extensions, also.

If you would like to run a TriviaBot in your own world, you can download TriviaBot at hamfon.com . If you have any questions, please check out the web page, or email HamFon .
